His it common for autistic children to have problems like these?!!!!!!!!!!!

Would like to hear from people who have autistic children. I have a eight yr old who has severe autism believed to be caused by vaccines.

My seven year old autistic son has constipation problems too. He had to go to hospital for an operation to remove the blockage. That was 4 weeks ago and he has only had one bowel movement since. He will hopefully be going back in this week to have it done again. He is also no verbal but for the last week has been whining in pain. He is going to be tested for ciliac disease and whatever else I can come up with over the next few days. I have heard this is common with autistic children because of the limited diet some have. If anyone else can think of any other tests I could ask for I would be very greatful!

To Heidi and Louise
You have to try and start giving gluten and casein free foods to your children, they also need to take liquid paraffin for a week and then pico sulphate at the weekend to get rid of the whole mess inside their bodies. Try more fruit not (apples) like pears and melon and lots more juice without aspartmine. Your doctor can give you a prescription for the liquid pariffin and pico sulphate. That was recommended by Dr Wakefield when he saw my son. Joan

It really is worth trying a gluten and casein free diet. See the Allergy Induced Autism website FMI. Started the diet last August (after the 'summer of diahorrea' - 'overflow' diahorrea can be a symptom of chronic constipation). My son (aged 7) was toilet trained within a week of stopping dairy. He had previously never had a poo on the toilet, in fact regularly smeared poo all over his bedroom. It was as if he didn't know what was coming and tried to clean himself up using whatever he could. Now, unless there's a diet infringement, all poos in toilet - hurrah. PS the Sunderland Test from the Autism Research Unit which tests for gluten/casein peptides in urine is a useful pursuader, although it can bring up a false negative result, as with my son - twice! I suggest trying no dairy for a week - it takes 5 days or so for casein peptides to leave the body. You may be amazed! The gfcf diet is hard but the results may be totally worth it. As a result, the whole family are eating more healthy foods and I've lost 1.5 stone! Casein free- buy Pure spread instead of butter/marg, rice milk - no yogurts/chocolate etc. Diet Intervention and Autism by Marilyn Le Breton is a good resource.

Good Luck

my autistic son is like this too now age 4 has lots of poos 2 or 3 per day, & smears all round the room & self he will not use the toilet
& his poss go from rock hard to totally loose sometimes within 4 hours.

have heard of the GFCF diet & know that my son is addicted to wheat products, bread cakes crackers etc & if we cut this out he would actually only eat processed ham, crisps, grapes lettuce & raw broccoli (he likes green things)

any advice given would be very helpful - we are gonna have to ditch his bedroom carpet as the whole house is beginning to smell like a public toilet - its impossible to keep scrupulously clean

Lola, Please go to www.autismmedical.com ** and read the introductory pages. Some of the site is subscription only but you may well find it worthwhile subscribing.

** Until a few years ago this was known as "Allergy Induced Autism" or AIA.

That is very sad.
It is really not easy with autistic kids! My cousins daughter is autistic as well and they had as well decided to remove the carpet in the bed room and replace it through a new cheap carpet like they talk about here http://www.societies.cam.ac.uk/cugac/articles/UK_Carpets_and_Carpet_Tiles.html - which they can replace more often

My son is now having seizures and I feel it is to do with his gut and bowel problems. I posted on this topic years ago and at that time Jack was not having seizures. Sadly he is on medication now to keep the seizures in check. He is on a bio medical intervention and gluten and casein free diet most of the time and his bowel movements are very good but I find when he is impacted his behaviour changes. What is that all about, it's just not right when he was doing so well for years and the thing is he only started having seizures at the age of nine.
Hope to see you at the rally next Saturday Louise. It will be good to meet up with other parents who are in the same boat as my self.

Joan,
I would recommend trying the specific carbohydrate diet with Jack. It goes a bit further than the gluten-free diet, but does more to eliminate other glutenlike proteins which can cause problems for some people. There is anecdotal evidence that this diet has helped alleviate seizures for some. I'll provide you with a link to Elaine Gottschall's book below, but it may be worthwhile to google around to find more current information about how this diet is helping others, and to even find support groups for helping manage this diet (if you are interested). Sadly, Elaine is no longer with us to offer advice with the diet she studied and espoused for a number of years, and was happy to do so with the many people who contacted her.

my son is 6 yeara old and severly autistic, he suffers from terrible constipation and has done for two yrs, whenever he goes to the doctors they just fob him off and give him movicol time and time again, they gave him blood tests and found that he has helibactorpyleri, a bug of the stomach, he finished his course of antibiotics but the problem of constipation is still there.

Immidgley,

What is your son eating? Perhaps there are some changes that can be made to his diet to help him.

Some information about helicobacter pylori/ h. pylori can be found on wikipedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helicobacter_pylori

Certain types of antibiotic appear to be the best way to eradicate the infection but one study suggests that eating broccoli sprouts may be a good way to control (but not eradicate totally) the bacteria.
