JABS INFORMATION ON SINGLE DOSE VACCINES

JABS is not primarily a provider of vaccine information but a support group of parents who feel their children have suffered a reaction or have been severely damaged by a vaccine. However, we are pleased to provide the following information which you may find helpful in your decision.

First, no childhood vaccine is compulsory in the UK so you have control over if, when and how you proceed with vaccinations for your child.

JABS believes that the MMR vaccine should be suspended and parents should have a right under the NHS system to request the single component vaccines.

However, even the single dose vaccines carry a risk of side effects so parents should have accurate information on the side effects of these too and also accurate information about the diseases.

One way to access this type of detailed information is to ask your chemist or your doctor to provide a copy of the manufacturer's information leaflet on any vaccine that you are interested in.

You could also ask your library for copies of medical text books on childhood illnesses but text books printed in the early 1960s. The single dose vaccines were introduced into the UK programme from 1967 upwards so any text book printed before then should not have a potential bias from a vaccine to influence the contents.

The measles disease is seen as the more serious of this group (MMR). Some doctors are willing to offer the measles vaccine first but please make sure that you have studied the drug sheet for this vaccine too. Measles, both as a natural disease and as a vaccine, may rarely be associated with fits/epilepsy or other neurological problems including autistic spectrum disorders. We have children registered with JABS who have suffered epilepsy and severe learning difficulties after the MMR vaccine. One family has been awarded the Government's vaccine damage payment after their daughter became epileptic following MMR vaccine. All three components of MMR are live vaccines. The single vaccines for measles, mumps and rubella are also live and carry a risk of side effects.

The drug manufacturers' information sheets specify that the live vaccine should not be given to anyone with a compromised immune system and gives a specific warning if there is a family or personal history of neurological problems or if the child has had a seizure of any kind. Some of the families registered with us who believe that their children were damaged from the single measles vaccine have learned with hindsight that there were contraindications to the vaccine that the vaccinating GP had not identified.

We currently have 2,000 children registered with JABS believed to have been severely affected by childhood vaccines. About two-thirds of the families who have completed questionnaires report a family history of allergies e.g.asthma, hayfever, antibiotics etc, and/or a family history of immune system problems like diabetes, arthritis, epilepsy, Crohn's disease etc. What we suspect, but the Department of Health senior advisers reject, is that if a child has inherited a sensitive immune system then he/she may not cope as well with a vaccine virus.

Thousands of parents have contacted JABS asking how to obtain the single dose vaccines. The Medicines Control Agency (MCA) will allow single dose measles, mumps and rubella vaccines in the following situations:

a) where a child has already started on a course of single dose vaccines

b) where the child has a special need, such as an allergic reaction, that makes the licensed product unsuitable.

Parents should contact their GP who, if he/she agrees, can issue a prescription on a named patient basis and provide medical advice relevant to each individual child. If the GP or other health professional has trouble in sourcing a single dose vaccine please ask them to contact JABS.

Please note that measles is considered the most serious of the three diseases measles, mumps and rubella, so perhaps should be considered first.

The term 'Medically indicated' or a similar phrase on the prescription allows access through the 'named patient' procedure. This CAN be done under the free NHS system if your GP is willing to help. The chemist seeing this term on the prescription is allowed to order the single dose vaccine from the licensed importer. When the prescription is seen by the licensed importer it may be allowed, again, under the MCA's rules. The MCA has asked doctors to explain the medical reason by adding a note to the prescription but this could be seen as breaking patient confidentiality. The doctor may justify the term to him/herself in that the child may be left unvaccinated without the choice of single doses and 'it is better to offer something rather than nothing'.

If your GP wishes to check this information ask him/her to contact the practice suppliers.

We have been contacted by the Health Care Commission (Private & Voluntary Healthcare Directorate www.healthcarecommission.org.uk Tel: 0207 448 9200) which commenced as a regulatory body on April 1st 2004. The main purpose of the HCC is to ensure that all organisations that have to register have been through a robust set of checks to ensure they are safe and competent people to provide the service to the public and have in place appropriate safeguards and quality assurance arrangements for their patients, to ensure that patients are properly protected.

The HCC has asked us to include in our information the need for parents to ensure that the clinics, and exclusively private doctors, parents choose to attend are registered by the HCC. Although JABS does not recommend nor endorse any of the following establishments or individual doctors, we list them for information purposes only. Please ensure that you ask the doctor/practitioner all relevant questions regarding the vaccines offered. (E.g. time interval between vaccines, name of manufacturer, date of manufacture, safety, efficacy, contra-indications to use of vaccine etc.)

PLEASE NOTE. JABS neither recommends nor advises against vaccination. We are fully aware that some children have and will continue to be damaged by combined and single dose vaccines. However, this knowledge does not mean that parents will leave their child unvaccinated. JABS is trying to support free choice and full information on the real risks of vaccination and childhood diseases.

Parents should appraise themselves of the registration status of the following doctors and clinics with the Health Care Commission.

I have been treating children and their illnesses for over 30 years. Prior to becoming a full-time Independent Practitioner, I was Senior Lecturer in Paediatrics at the University of Sheffield. I have always used single vaccines, and have never administered the combined MMR vaccine. I will not use vaccines containing Thiomersal (Mercury).
We administer Measles first as it is by far the most important of the "MMR" vaccines.  Measles and Rubella vaccines are supplied to us by Sanofi Pasteur MSD (France), while Merck (USA) supply Mumpsvax (Jeryl Lynn strain).

Our Surgery is open every weekday for appointments. We offer many other vaccines, including
Chickenpox, Pneumovax, Hepatitis A & B, HPV, Rotavirus, 'flu', holiday vaccines etc. We also provide options to replace the "5 in 1" (Pediacel) vaccine.
Currently we do not have a waiting list for ANY vaccine, including Mumpsvax. We do not charge for our Information Pack, aftercare or telephone advice. There is no Registration fee, and we do not require prepayment.

For further information and updates please contact me by any of the above
methods.

Fees: Measles vaccine £110.00
Mumps vaccine £145.00
Rubella vaccine £90.00 Chickenpox    £125.00 Fees for other vaccines are available upon request.

Before you take any decision remember to ask:

  • Does my child really need this vaccination?
  • Is my child well enough to have a vaccine?
  • Has my child had a bad reaction to a vaccination before?
  • Does my child or family have a history of:
vaccine reactions?
convulsions?
neurological disorders?
allergies (asthma, antibiotics)?
Immune system problems?
  • Do I have full information on the vaccine's side effects?
  • Do I know how to identify a vaccine reaction?
  • Do I know how and why my doctor should report a vaccine reaction?
  • Do I know the vaccine's name and batch number?

I hope the above information helps with your decision and if we can help further please do not hesitate to contact JABS on 01942 713565.

PLEASE NOTE: Nothing in the above information should be taken to be medical advice. Vaccination decisions should be made only after proper consultation with your medical advisor.
